Teach English, Maths and other subjects and activities such as sports, art or music in schools that are run especially for some of Bangalore’s poorest children, giving them the best education and facilities available, as well as food, clothing, medical attention, and invaluable life skills.
Your skills are needed to work one to one or in small groups with children who are falling behind in Maths and English but you could also find yourself building a tree house and preparing for concerts, or visiting the surrounding orphanages to play with the children, helping with music, arts and crafts or even helping write up child profiles.
These are fantastic opportunities to help some of India’s most vulnerable children with the bonus of daily satisfaction, a lot of fun and many huge, beaming smiles.

200 children a day come to this community centre from a slum surrounded by wealthy neighbourhoods.
You’ll be a volunteer in a community centre set up by a mother and daughter who have a vision of a fairer and more equal India, where everyone can work in dignity and respect and believe that for these children a sense of confidence and self-worth are as important as education to help break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and ignorance among the slum communities.
The community centre provides a loving and secure home for some of the city’s orphans and children from unstable backgrounds, runs a pre-school for children aged 2 – 5 where they can play and receive basic education, nutrition and care and an after-school programme, which helps children aged 5 – 16 to improve their reading and writing skills and also encourages them to get involved in various creative activities.
So as a volunteer you’ll use all your other skills and experience with children who love to learn and discover new things and you’ll forge friendships you won’t forget …..
…. and you’ll have a lot of fun in one of India’s most vibrant high-tech cities.

This project brings together kids, student volunteers and 20 donated spaces in city schools to provide centres for extra tuition and to encourage children to learn by giving them an enjoyable experience using everything from clay and paint to singing and objects from everyday life.
The centres run two and a half hour sessions in shifts, morning and afternoon, so there can be as many as 60 children aged from 6 upwards coming through in any day.
As a GapGuru volunteer you’ll be attached to one or two of the centres for the whole period so you can really get to know the children you are helping.
As well as helping with the classes in English, Maths, general life skills, art, drama and sports, you’ll become the children’s bhaias and didis (older brothers and older sisters) acting as their mentors and walking them to and from school so you get to know the local community,

Whether you’re pre- during- or finished with med school, this state of the art 150-bed hospital offers a great opportunity to develop your skills.
It’s a private hospital with excellent facilities and a social conscience.
Doctors operate free of charge for people who can’t afford treatment and donors are found to pay for their care under their Samvedana (empathy) programme. They also believe they have a duty to help train young people so particularly welcome volunteers who haven’t yet started medical training.
As well as the main hospital the group it belongs to runs a rural hospital and outreach programmes for the elderly and for school-age children in and around Pune and it has a unique programme, costing the equivalent of GBP10 a year, to provide full medical cover for the impoverished elderly.
This is a great opportunity if you’re thinking of a career in medicine and particularly good if you haven’t yet started your training.

The academy trains about 130 boys and girls, from 6-21 and there are 45 girl members. It even has an all-girls rugby team!
Their aim is to provide the players a chance to achieve their potential and in so doing enable them to play at the highest possible level. The focus is on individual development with children from a variety of backgrounds.
