Teach in Sri Lanka and help underprivileged village communities

Spend your gap year teaching in Sri Lanka in village communities around the picturesque city of Kandy. Sri Lankans living in rural areas often do not have access to good educational facilities and volunteer teaching can make a real difference in helping children to receive a full education.

Gap year volunteer role:  Volunteers teaching in Sri Lanka work in pre-schools with children aged 4-8, or in upper schools teaching children aged 8-17. The main role is to teach English abroad, but volunteers can also run arts and crafts activities for younger students.

As a teaching volunteer in Sri Lanka you will work alongside local teachers and play an important role in improving education and developing English language skills among both students and staff.

Participants on this gap year teaching project will also find plenty of opportunities to get involved with extra-curricular activities outside of the classroom. Running drama and sports sessions can be a great way to engage local children and cross cultural boundaries.

Your gap year experience:  This is a fantastic opportunity to teach English abroad and work with charming and highly motivated students in a spectacular tropical setting. Volunteers are encouraged to use their skills and creativity to come up with interactive ways of teaching, making it a diverse and rewarding gap year experience.

Volunteers teaching on their gap year in Sri Lanka can play a key role in improving English language skills in areas where education can make a real difference and help locals to gain good jobs in the growing tourist industry.

Those volunteering to teach in Sri Lanka often gain as much from the experience as they give to local communities. By living and working in rural Sri Lankan communities, gap year volunteers gain an insight into simple Buddhist lifestyles while building their own skills and confidence.

Introduction to volunteering in Sri Lanka: All our Sri Lanka volunteer projects include a one week induction, which is your first step towards making the most of your gap year! This is an action packed and fun-filled week that lets you get to know the Sri Lankan lifestyle and culture firsthand. You will get time to meet local people, taste local cuisine and familiarize yourself with Sri Lankan customs.

he introduction week takes place in Kandy and is included in the price of all teaching projects. To find out more please speak to a GapGuru advisor.
