Volunteer to teach in Tanzania and help
rural children at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro
Teaching in Tanzania is a fascinating
way to spend your gap year, and with
Mount Kilimanjaro on your doorstep, and classes full
of eager school children, this voluntary
project really is something special.
The area around Kilimanjaro is populated by the Chagga tribe, who have
always placed a strong emphasis on education. However,
as is the case in much of Tanzania, learning resources are scarce and
volunteers wanting to teach English abroad
are always welcomed.
GagGuru provides support for primary schools teaching
children within walking distance of Moshi town centre, where
pupils speak English
as their third language after Kichagga and Kiswahili. The primary
schools on our gap year teaching
projects are well established but
average class sizes can be large and vary between 60 and 80 pupils,
making teacher-student interaction minimal.
Gap year volunteer role:
Volunteers travelling to teach in Tanzania
will assist school staff and teach English
to children aged 7-15 years old. Volunteer
teaching
in Tanzania involves working with groups and individuals,
running activities during lessons, and planning lessons with local
teachers.
While this role is primarily to teach English
in Tanzania, the head teachers are keen to take gap year
students who are interested in
helping out with art and sport. These activities take place in the
afternoon and can be tailored to your own interests as a gap
year volunteer. Expect lots of participants!
As a volunteer to teach English you
may have the opportunity to take your own classes, making you
responsible
for planning lessons and marking books. Volunteers teaching children abroad will have between
10-15 periods per
week and will be expected to teach to the curriculum.
Both schools on this gap year programme
have basic equipment such as textbooks, blackboards and chalk,
but can provide little else. In these circumstances, those wanting to teach English abroad are encouraged to make
visual aids and make lessons fun through activities and games.
Your gap year experience:
Volunteering to teach children in Tanzania allows you to
develop a range of personal skills on your gap year. Volunteers
teaching English abroad will gain experience planning,
communicating and evaluating lesson plans, while developing an in
depth understanding of another culture.
Volunteers teaching children in Tanzania
also build strong relationships with staff and students, and many find
it hard to
leave at the end of their placement! Finally, a gap year teaching project
in Moshi makes you perfectly placed to explore the rest of Tanzania, and
Mount Kilimanjaro
provides the ultimate personal challenge after you finish your volunteer placement.
