Mysore

Posted By Ryan Hill on 07 Aug 2010
Friday 2nd July - We went to a party with our new friends from Cameroon, Nelson and Stephane. Nelson is an aspiring actor and model and Stephane works for Tata, India's biggest conglomerate. Tata are crazy, about 30% of the vehicles are made by them, as well as owning a satellite TV network, mobile phone network, hotels, bottled water and there's even Tata Ceramics! A company could never become such a huge entity in the West, but in India several big companies seem to dominate all the markets.

Week Two

Posted By Ryan Hill on 06 Aug 2010
Wow, I've been so lazy this week. Well, it could be due to my tiredness... I've been watching the football until 2am every night, and have been up for work at 8 – it could have something to do with it. I have helped re-organise the financial statements this week, and I spent the whole of Wednesday and Thursday answering questions for the company on their background and goals.

Exploring Bangalore and more

Posted By Ryan Hill on 05 Aug 2010
On Sunday I went with some friends to a crafts fair in Bangalore. There was four of us, and one of the girls we were with managed to find us a driver. His van looked ancient, and I sat in the front passenger seat, where I had to lean forward as the recline mechanism on my seat was broken, so if I leant back I'd crush Maceik! (who was sat behind me) This really made me think about the standards of not just transport in India, but everything, and how in the west we really fail to appreicate the flash new cars we can afford and the expectations we have of transport services.

Pressure

Posted By Ryan Hill on 04 Aug 2010
Day two at my placement and Karen was under pressure for the big meeting, but still maintaining her calm demeanour and cheery outlook. I got straight down to work, re-reading the notes I had made from the day before and discussing my findings with Karen. She was pleased with what I had achieved so far, and shortly after this meeting I cracked on with my work.

Starting my Placement

Posted By Ryan Hill on 03 Aug 2010
Hi! So I've reached Friday, the end of my first week. The last few days have been hectic and I've really been making the most of my time here in Incredible India! To continue from my last blog, after leaving Hema's house we met up with Vipul for a night on the town.

My Introduction to India

Posted By Ryan Hill on 02 Jun 2010
Wow! That kind of sums up my feelings towards Bangalore and everything I have been exposed to so far! I arrived at Manchester Airport on Monday at about 12.15pm, the other guys were already in the check in queue. I had neither met nor seen the faces of the other volunteers from Leeds Met so far, so I was a bit apprehensive that I might waste time trying to search Terminal 1 for them! Luckily for me, they had my passport, and spotted me from the queue.

Mysore

Posted By Tom Medley White on 06 Jan 2008
A jam packed weekend! We left early on Saturday morning; Mysore is about a 4 hour drive from Bangalore. We stopped on the way for traditional South Indian breakfast, before stopping at Srirangapatna. This place, a few km from Mysore is a tourist hotspot, for Indians and foreigners alike. It is crammed with temples, mosques and ruins. It was once a huge fortress town, ruled by Tipu Sultan, but it fell to the British in 1799.

ISKCON Temple

Posted By Tom Medley White on 05 Jan 2008
Last Sunday I went out with some friends from Woodstock to see ISKCON Temple. ISKCON stands for The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (the ‘Hare Krishna’ movement). The temple itself is enormous, though divided up into many small sections; the largest room is probably smaller than the average parish church. The centrepiece is a large golden shrine for Krishna, which is surrounded by flowers and oil lamps.

Commercial Street and Parade Ground

Posted By Tom Medley White on 04 Jan 2008
The other day I was working the late shift (4.30-1.30) so I had most of the day free to explore more of Bangalore. This time I went to Commercial Street, the main shopping district. This area has been largely untouched by western shops and remains chock full of traditional Indian shops and wares. It is just amazing to wander around, I have by no means finished exploring the area. Round every corner there is another tiny street crammed with shops, and where there isn’t a shop front there’s a stall placed in front of the wall.

A Day Out in Bangalore

Posted By Tom Medley White on 03 Jan 2008
I took to the streets of Bangalore on my own today, which was quite scary but quite fun. Inevitably everything which people always say happens happened, beggars followed me around, every market stall you looked at had the owner coming out and offering you something to buy, and there were plenty of cows! I kept to the main streets today, M.G Road and Brigade Road, though I did spend some time wandering round some of the smaller streets nearby.

Arrival

Posted By Tom Medley White on 02 Jan 2008
Sorry this has taken a long time to come, but since arrival life has been non-stop! I will tell you more about things when I have my internet properly set up (I am just using the computer in the office at the moment). Arrival in India is a complete shock to all the senses. No guide books can possibly prepare you for the overwhelming nature of experiencing the sight, sound, smell of a completely different culture all in one go.

My time in India!

Posted By David Kershaw on 10 May 2006
Working in India was a strange experience, through which, I have gained a lot of qualities which will be of use careerwise, as well as some great stories, and good friends. I worked as a culture coach, meaning I corrected misunderstandings, and gave a British perspective. I ran sessions on UK culture to groups of about 20-40 on a weekly basis, covering everything from what we think of the weather, what cars we drive, the houses we live in to what we think about marriage .

Elephant Safari

Posted By David Kershaw on 16 Jan 2006
So I got rammed by an elephant yesterday. Well, actually let's start from the beginning. One of my friends at work was arranging an outing to the jungle. So the 24 of us got on a 15 seater dirty-but-used-to-be-bright-red-and-white bus converted to a 22 seater by the magic of seats which were upright, and reducing the leg room. The roof of the bus was actually held together with carpet!! So, we drove on and ended up in the jungle, at a place with a freezing swimming pool and a tennis table.

Dancing Dave

Posted By David Kershaw on 12 Nov 2005
Here's to Englishmen who can't dance! It appears that there are a few bars and clubs in Bangalore, and it seems to be the way of my workmates over here that everyone goes to a club every weekend. There's another Englishman out here, called Mic, and he's an Englishman who can't dance...ahem.. a fellow Englishman who can't dance. Yes, we were invited for a night out by three girls at work, and we made idiots out of ourselves in the proud Englishman-abroad fashion after that one-too-many.

Hello and Help me

Posted By David Kershaw on 08 Oct 2005
OK, I'm here, I'm tired, finding it hard to eat properly and not achieving anything. Welcome to india! So, after that scary start, let's just say that I love this place!! I've sorted myself out and have set budgets, timings and extravagancies sensibly for a daily basis in Bangalore. The only trouble I'm having is at work. Me and Deepak were given the responsibility of coming up with an incentive, so we set out some rules, asked what's achievable and sensible, and have done some advertising.
