THE PROGRAMME – TEACHING ENGLISH
Knowledge of English is seen as a very important aspect of the Indian educational system. As India is multi lingual and multi cultural, English is the most common language of official communication. Thus at any level some knowledge of English is very crucial to communicate or to get a better job.
During your first week you will be provided an orientation to understand the Indian education system and to help you get started this will include teaching workshops by qualified trainers and a visit/placement in small nursery schools. This shall enable you to be more effective in teaching the children whom you shall work with.
You will be placed in a school for underprivileged children and work under the guidance of the school management. Your role may range from:
• Working with the class teacher
• Taking smaller groups independently,
• Preparing teaching aids or
• Tutoring children individually who may need additional assistance
You may also be able to help with numeracy or with art and craft sessions or even taking the children out for educational trips. Some projects may even request your assistance in running sessions in conversational English with adults, who might either be beneficiaries of the programme or teachers and staff working with them.
You will be required to maintain a daily record of your input and fill in lesson plans (as required by the schools), and give a fortnightly report to your local GapGuru coordinator.
The project would be open to any suggestions that you may have which could benefit the children and may even require you to conduct a workshop or presentation at the end of your placement.
ACCOMMODATION
During your stay in Kolkata, you will be provided safe, clean and basic accommodation either sharing an independent apartment with other volunteers or staying at the project itself. Arrangements will be available for you to cater for your own meals at the apartment – or you may wish to choose from plenty of local restaurants all over the city that provide good local food at cheap prices.
 WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
Volunteers who have an inclination towards teaching, which very often needs patience, innovative ideas and adaptability especially when it comes to dealing with underprivileged children.
There is no special qualifications required to be a volunteer you should just enjoy working with children, be very enthusiastic and compassionate, bring bundles of energy and creativity.
