Narelle Evans: Gap Year Images

Narelle Evans

Gap period:Sep 2005 to Jan 2006
Hi,
I decided to take a gap year prior to going on to university to gain valuable work experience and at the same time, travel and explore another culture.

I chose India because it offered the perfect combination of new and old - vibrant and dynamic cities and places of great historical interest.

Love Nellie

Narelle Evans: Gap Year Images Yeah I'm havin a wicked time. I'm really starting to get into the swing of things although still a little homesick. Geetika and the family are really lovely. I'm so glad that I got put into their home. Tom's here now so I also have some other company.

The project is going well and I start teaching my dance classes today. I've been hanging out with the guys loads though. I've made so many friends through the place and I often spend the evenings in the bars with some of the guys.

My first three weeks in Delhi have been crazy but nothing short of amazing. I was worried I'd not be able to accept the culture or that I wouldn't get along with the host family but I couldn't have been more wrong. The family I'm staying with are friendlier than I could ever have imagined and with the two jobs and loads of new friends to go out and socialise with there's never a dull moment.

My Salsa job allows me to socialise with people my age and make loads of new friends. It's a chance to have some real fun.

Narelle Evans: Gap Year Images My voluntary work at the project is teaching me more about Indian culture and introducing me to the problems the company is working to resolve. I've met some amazing children from the clusters of slums and seeing them smile and laugh is priceless. It makes everything I'm doing here worthwhile.

It's great having the weekends off as I have a chance to go sightseeing. This weekend I explored Old Delhi and saw the Red Fort and I have seen many other beautiful temples and historical sights. The only problem with the trip is that it's going too fast. Time flies when you're having fun!
