Laura Baxter: Gap Year Images

Laura Baxter

Gap period: Aug to Nov 2006
Hi,
I'm Laura. I am 23 and work as an Assistant Psychologist in the UK.

I wanted to take a break from work to gain experience living and working in a different culture. So far, I have settled into my project at the centre for autism, and taken a number of trips to Agra and the Himalayas. Over the next few months, I will be travelling to Jaipur and taking a Tiger Safari as well as continuing to gain experience in the field of autism!

Laura Baxter: Gap Year Images I've finally managed to get to a 'cyber-cafe'! It turns out that there's one right near where I'm staying, so hopefully I'll be able to get here quite often from now on.

So, where to start?! I arrived at Delhi airport on Saturday lunchtime, after spending about 6 hours at Heathrow! The queues were crazy because of the security...it took ages just to get to the departure lounge. The good news is that I was upgraded to 'Premium Economy', which meant extra leg-room and a glass of champagne, which was very nice! When I arrived at Delhi I got through customs etc really quickly, and was met by a friendly driver. I had prepared myself for the worst at the airport, but it was actually fine...not too busy, hot or smelly! On my way out of the airport I was interviewed by some TV channel who asked me about the security in London-quite random...but maybe I'm now famous somewhere in India?!

The journey to my home stay was interesting...they don't seem to use lanes in Delhi, and people use their horns instead of indicators! There are also rickshaw's weaving in and out of the traffic, and the occasional cow mooing it's way past.

My home stay is really nice. I'm staying with Geetika Jerath and her husband 'Rocky', their two children, Rashika who's 14 and Rahul who's 7. Geetika's sister-in-law also lives next door and joins us for dinner (which is lovely - lots of lentils and rice!). They've made me feel very welcome - they've had volunteers stay with them before, so that helps a lot. I'm the only volunteer staying there at the moment, but there should be a couple more people coming out next month, which will be good. At the moment I've got my own room, with a double bed (!) and my own bathroom.
