Briony Labram: Gap Year Images

Briony Labram

Hi,

I’m Briony and I’m living in Pune for two months working with slum children and teaching them English. I am then then going to New Delhi to work in the community hospital for a month. I decided to take a gap year before starting university to experience different customs and to live in a culture so very different to my own.

Briony Labram : Gap Year Images On friday afternoon Pady and I met and took the train from Pune to Mumbai. It was a four hour train journey but we were in the AC carriage and it was very comfortable. At the station we met one of our friends who we have made whilst living here in Pune and we all took a taxi to our hotel. I was a bit worried about the hotel as they didnt take my name when I rang up to book it they just said that it would be fine....however they were actually expecting us when we did arrive. The hotel was very basic and we had shared bathrooms however it was so very very clean!

In Mumbai we did many toursity things such as Elephant Island, visited temples and mosques. We also went to the national gallery of modern art which was worth a visit and we spent a fair bit of time in leopols cafe/bar which is packed with travellers from all over the world. It is a brilliant place to meet people and go for a few drinks with them the food is great but a bit more expensive than othermore traditional indian places in Mumbai.

On the saturday evening John, Paddy and I were scouted to be in an indian advert! We were a bit apprehensive (sp?) however we met at Mc Donalds at 8am the following morning with 8 other gappers. A goup of guys were also from the UK which was really nice to speak to them about India as they had only been in the country for a few days!

We then took a taxi to a five star hotel and we spent the whole day filming, however there was a lot of waiting around but it was a lot of fun and we got free food and got paid for it!

Another really nice thing about doing the advert is that we spent a day with other travellers and so we all went out in the evening to leopols for a drink!
Paddy and I actually took Monday and Tuesday off work to spend more time in Mumbai. I really loved the city, there is plently to do and see. It really is a happening place to be with many bars and also travellers who you can talk to about experiences in India!
