What are the selection criteria ?
Selection criteria are normally specified by the gap placement organization. Candidates are required to be a minimum of 18 years old at the time of departure. Other attributes that gap year employers seek would normally cover academic and other achievements as well as looking for the ability to meet new challenges, live and work in a different culture.
-
What will I be required to do ?
Your work will depend upon the organization you are placed with. In most cases the gap placement organization would move you around different roles and responsibilities depending upon your ability and aptitude. We seek to include organizations in our gap year programs which provide a good learning opportunity to the candidates while enabling them to earn money to subsidize the cost of seeing a new country and having new experiences.
-
Would I be able to bring the money I earn back to the UK ?
Unfortunately not. The money you earn will be in Indian Rupees which is still not a fully convertible currency and therefore cannot be taken out of the country or converted to Sterling. You would however be able to use the money during your traveling to pay for your expenses in India and even for your shopping or backpacking India on completion of your Work placement.
-
Can I travel while on my placement ?
You would have regular working hours as in any full time placement and it is your responsibility to meet your work commitments. However you would have time off on weekends and public holidays that you can use as you please. This is normally a good opportunity to explore the nearby places and take short travel breaks. Our In - Country GapGuru team will be happy to advise you on places to visit and also help you make the arrangements.
-
What sort of training will I be given ?
The training you receive will depend upon the placement organization and the business sector that you are working in. Most organizations would provide you training in the product that they deal with as well in some cases you may also receive some skills training. This is normally a good opportunity to learn about how large or global organizations operate and the opportunity to learn is more than what is provided just in training sessions.
-
Will this work experience be useful for me in the UK ?
Definitely. In most cases you would be working either with large organizations that are recognized in their field of work or with brands that are well known in the UK. As such the experience you gain on your gap year would certainly be valued in the UK within the specific sector that you gained the experience.
