Volunteer abroad and help with teaching at community education centres

Help slum and street children into education on your gap year in India. We partner with two projects here that strive to bring together street kids and volunteers with energy and enthusiasm to help educate and brighten the lives of less privileged children. The projects take education to children who cannot make their way to schools. They run classes in makeshift camps closer to construction sites, in shared school spaces. Both projects were established more than 15 years ago and run many centres in Pune.

Teach Children From Slum - Your role

Gap year volunteer role: You'll use all your skills and ingenuity to find innovative ways of encouraging and enthusing children to continue to learn in some very difficult circumstances as well as helping them with basic English and other subjects. After a short induction period you will either be working alongside existing teaching staff or looking after a group of children yourself.

You will have your own specified groups to teach, your own set timetable and a curriculum. This will normally involve English, Math, General Awareness, Arts and Crafts or any other subjects that fascinate them and are likely to inspire the children. You'll be able to bring new ideas to the project, which welcomes innovation, and is always on the lookout for new ways of motivating the children. At times, you may be asked to round up children from their homes and walk them to schools.

You might even come up with innovative ideas for them to earn a living. One gapper came up with an idea for the children to make and sell beaded straps for sunglasses and the project encouraged it!

There are opportunities to help in a variety of ways depending upon your interests, skills and ability.

Your gap year experience: This is a wonderful opportunity to work with a committed group of people on your gap year to make a difference to the lives of some of the poorest children. You will independently run classes and activities, be appreciated for what you offer and leave with memories, many friends and a sense of having done something meaningful.
