Sri Lanka is a beautiful place to spend time volunteering abroad with orphans and disadvantaged children. This gap year volunteer project gives you the opportunity to work in under-funded orphanages in and around Kandy.
Gap year volunteer role: Orphanages in Sri Lanka have limited resources and staff, so volunteer childcare can play an important role in caring for local children. You do not need any previous experience to work as an orphanage volunteer, just the energy and enthusiasm to make a difference during your stay.
Your volunteer abroad role can be varied and you will have the opportunity to get involved in every aspect of the orphanage’s work. Gap year volunteers support local staff in day-to-day cleaning and feeding activities, but they can also assume more creative roles, drawing, colouring, acting and singing with the children.
Orphanage volunteering can also involve teaching children basic English or helping them with their homework, as well as entertaining the children with games and outdoor activities.
Your gap year experience: By working on volunteer childcare projects on your gap year in Sri Lanka, you can make a real difference to the lives of orphaned and disadvantaged children living in rural communities.
As an orphanage volunteer you can help to make orphanages brighter and happier environments for children to live in, making it an incredibly worthwhile and rewarding gap year experience.
Because the children are very young you do not need any specific skills to have a positive impact, but those who volunteer abroad learn many new ones through their experience. With volunteer projects based in the stunning tropical hills of Kandy, there is plenty to see and do during your weekends off.
Introduction to volunteering in Sri Lanka: All our Sri Lanka volunteer projects include a one week induction, which is your first step towards making the most of your gap year! This is an action packed and fun-filled week that lets you get to know the Sri Lankan lifestyle and culture firsthand. You will get time to meet local people, taste local cuisine and familiarise yourself with Sri Lankan customs.
The introduction week takes place in Kandy and is included in the price of all volunteer projects lasting 5 weeks or longer. To find out more please speak to a GapGuru advisor.
