Volunteering With Slum Children in Chennai

We arrived in Chennai late at night and we were taken to our lovely home stay; the home of Tilaka. After catching up on some much needed sleep we met with Maria; the principal of the school we were volunteering at. She explained that the government had decided to not open schools in Tamil Nadu until the 15th June. However this meant that we got two weeks of working in two different children's hostels.Our first day of volunteering was spent in a hostel close to our home stay.

After being settled in by Carolina (the GapGuru rep) and shown around the area briefly, we began our first week in Baca Ortiz children's hospital. It is the only free hospital in the whole of Ecuador and so people travel far and wide to be seen to. We work in the lovely Ludoteca, the hospital playroom en el cuarto piso (on the fourth floor). Here long term patients and visiting siblings gather for some play relief. Throughout the weeks, we met some lovely children.
