Volunteer in Romania schools and change children's lives

Romania isn’t your usual gap year destination but that’s exactly why volunteering there can be so special! Our projects are based in a unique part of the country where you’re more likely to bump into someone speaking Hungarian rather than Romanian, but whatever the language, learning English can have a huge impact on their lives. Help make this happen by volunteering in a Romania secondary school and teaching English to disadvantaged children!

Gap year volunteering role: This project is based in the Transylvanian town of Szekelyudvarhely, better know as Udvarhely. Volunteers work at a secondary school that dates back to the 16th century, which is keen to recruit native English speaking volunteers to help improve standards of English among its 400 students. The children are aged between 12 and 18 years old and can really benefit from their interaction with gap travel volunteers.

As a teaching volunteer in Romania you will be asked to work with children of various ages, helping to improve their education and acting as a role model to encourage good values and behaviour, both in and out of the classroom. Gap year volunteers can teach their own classes or work as a teaching assistant, using interactive activities to engage with students and improve their English.

The school has a strong musical tradition so volunteers teaching in Romania can get involved in music lessons if they have a special interest. The headmaster is also keen for volunteers to run sports sessions and arts and crafts activities in the afternoons for the children who live in the school dormitory.

Your gap year experience: This Romania volunteer project is perfect for anyone who wants to experience life at the heart of Eastern Europe, while helping children in genuine need. The students are always excited to see new faces so your efforts can have a big impact on their lives and learning.

This volunteer teaching role requires no qualifications or previous experience, simply an enthusiasm to teach and willingness to be creative and provide fun and interactive lessons. Any familiarity with Hungarian language is useful but gap travel volunteers will be supported at all times by both school staff and our local coordinator, so it is not essential. Udvarhely itself is a very pleasant town with a rich history and you will be well-placed to visit the many attractions of the beautiful Transylvania region.
