Play and Coach Football or Netball in local village schools.
If you want to volunteer during your gap year, volunteer with schools in Tanzania that need your skills. If you are into sports, enjoy a game or two, want to make a difference, this project would be ideal for you. GapGuru works with several rural schools in Tanzania. Most of them are primary schools, some are secondary. Teaching and infrastructure here is quite basic. Children look forward to the little time of play that they get. Needless to say, they are football obsessed and any volunteer aiming to teach them techniques of the game or simply playing with them is given a warm welcome.
Your role:
As a volunteer helping build sports programmes you could spend your time in several schools or focused on one particular school , playing football with the children, organising games and competitions and helping them build knowledge of the game.
Sports facilities are very limited in Tanzania, so you will need to almost start from scratch and be prepared to work with little or no resources. The head teachers of the schools we work with see the benefit of sports and are keen to introduce this within the curriculum so you will need to help them plan a schedule and organise after school clubs for the children to get the opportunity.
You could combine sports coaching with English teaching and depending upon your interests a programme can be put together to suit your skills and capabilities.
What you gain:
Well, you definitely will get fitter by playing the game during the week. The kids will be difficult to say good bye to at the end of your programme and you will carry back fond memories, longing to go there again. But, while you are there don’t miss the Serengeti or the Ngorngoro Crater.
