Teach abroad at a secondary school in Quito
You will work in a secondary school that was set up and funded by a neighbouring private school. This school has 190 underprivileged children aged between 12 and 18 from the surrounding area. It provides free education to children who need to pass an entrance exam to be able to attend. The school really needs the energy and enthusiasm of our volunteers to help educate and inspire these children, many of who have come from poor farming backgrounds. The school’s teachers often struggle in the fields of English and computer science, which is where gap year volunteers help make a real difference!
Gap year volunteer role:
Gap year volunteers generally support the English classes working as a teaching assistant. You can introduce fun games and activities in order to make the lessons more fun, share stories about your country and way of life to help the children widen their horizons. The school has a computer room, but the teachers are not very confident with new technology. Gap Year volunteers can help teach pupils basic computer skills such as word processing and creating spreadsheets.
A good level of Spanish is an advantage, especially if you want to teach computer skills. We can arrange Spanish lessons for you in Quito to brush up on your language skills.
This programme requires a minimum of 12 weeks and a minimum age of 18. Volunteers need good communication skills, an open mind; lots of enthusiasm and a good sense of humour! Our philosophy is to encourage the students to learn by having fun in the lessons.
Before leaving you can take a TEFL week end in order to prepare build your teaching confidence and provide you with some tools to make your lessons more effective.
Your gap year experience:
This is a great way to contribute towards a good cause and to aid the development of these children and young aduts. They really need a decent education to help them to get a good job and improve their quality of life.
Accommodation:
You have two options, with regards to accommodation. You can stay with a local family either in Quito, if you want the hustle and bustle life of the city, or in the area around the school for a quieter opportunity to get involved in the community.
