This is an exciting paid teaching programme for university graduates who want to experience the real China while earning money on their gap year! Gain experience that will help you become a professional teacher as you teach English as a foreign language in schools and training centres in Yangshuo.
Gap year teaching role: This English teaching programme is based in Yangshuo in Guangxi Province, a region famous for its rural charm and spectacular scenery. Your gap year work begins with an intense 4 week TEFL course, which will give you an introduction to Chinese culture and language, and train you in preparation for your teaching placement.
During this training period you will be allocated a secondary school or training centre, where you will begin teaching abroad for a minimum of 4 months. Those teaching at a school will work with classes of various sizes (usually 30-60 children) in a structured curriculum. The schools have excellent facilities and as well as teaching English abroad, you can get involved in various extra-curricular activities and sports. The academic year is split into 2 semesters, each lasting around 5 months and your gap year job will usually start in September.
Teaching in China in training centres is slightly different, as the classes are much smaller and you could be teaching English as a foreign language to a range of ages: kids, teenagers, college students and adults. The training centres are busiest during the winter and summer breaks but gap year teachers are likely to get paid more and starting and leaving dates are more flexible.
Your gap year experience: This paid teaching project is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience of teaching abroad while living and working in China and learning more about its unique culture. And best of all you’ll be getting paid for it! Even if you haven’t taught before, the TEFL course will allow you to meet fellow teachers and gain confidence in the classroom through a structured programme of training. This course acts as the perfect introduction to life in China and gap year teachers are taken on several excursion in the surrounding area to help them settle in.
Teaching placement details: Everyone who is accepted on this paid teaching programme and completes the 4 week TEFL course will be placed in a school or training centre. The average salary is 400-700 Euros per month. Those teaching English as a foreign language must be willing to work a minimum of 20 hours per week and are guaranteed 2 days off per week.
Requirements for paid teaching in China: In most cases, participants on this gap year programme need to:
- Be 22-45 years old
- Have a university degree
- Be a native English speaker
A teaching placement will be given to all native English speakers with a university degree upon successful completion of the TEFL course. Non-native English speakers and non-degree holders are welcome on this gap year teaching project, but cannot be picky in terms of their placement or salary demands.
