Passionate about music...here is your opportunity to spread the word!
Musicians and music fans are needed to volunteer on this gap year project with this non-profit organisation that works to promote rock music in India. As a gap year volunteer you can teach an instrument, help in the recording studio, or gain experience in organising concerts and other events.
The project organises a large annual music festival in Chennai, hosts weekly concerts for local bands and runs regular "battle of the bands " competitions. The centre houses a modern recording studio where albums are recorded by local bands. There is also a music school for tuition in musical instruments like guitars, drums, bass and keyboards.
But it is not all about the music! This organisation has an active involvement in community development, sponsoring underprivileged students through college, and campaigning against drug and alcohol abuse amongst the youth.
Your role:
Your role here will very much depend on where your talents lie. This is not just a gap year project for musicians! If you do play guitar, drums, bass or keyboards you can teach your instrument in the music school and hold workshops for students. For those with an interest in recording, you can lend a hand in the recording studio, using your knowledge and learning some tricks of the trade. While you are there you might also want to start a band or maybe join an existing one. If you are qualified to teach an instrument or are a music educator, it helps the project immensely.
Non-musicians can also get involved by helping with event management, marketing and promotion of concerts, festivals and other events. For organizing and managing events, you will need to have the following basic skills:
Being able to write (web content, press updates, brochures)
Experience in making corporate presentations, the business of marketing the event
Motivated to glean from & make better the events
Experience in artist relations & band scheduling
Live sound, stage management etc
What you gain:
This is a great way to gain experience in all areas of the music industry during your gap year, and at the same time be involved in the cultural life of modern India whilst inspiring young people through music. It offers an excellent learning opportunity for a career in music.
