An opportunity to observe and experience the various departments in this speciality hospital.
This is a state of the art private hospital that focuses on social equity. It's run by a team of leading doctors who not only work selflessly to help the poor and infirm, but are also committed to training young people and raising the standards of the medical profession. The doctors welcome gap year volunteers from all levels, whether pre-university, medical students or graduate doctors. Hospital specialties include neurology, haematology, cardiac care and surgery, orthopaedics and joint replacement, paediatrics, diabetes, hand and foot surgery. Other departments include hypertensive clinics, nephrology, urology, trauma, cosmetology, internal medicine and medical genetics. The hospital also emphasises research in the ongoing pursuit of "cutting edge medical expertise." The staff believes they have a duty to help train young people and particularly welcome interns who haven't started medical training yet, so if you're thinking of a career in medicine this is a great chance to find out more.
Your role:
What you will do during your internship will depend on your level of experience. Pre-university gappers will observe the work of different departments, including operations. They will also be able to get involved in hospital protocols and working at reception, in customer care, talking to/counseling patients and making sure they are happy. If you're a pre training intern you will be able to develop your skills in communication and pastoral care, reception and observation of procedures.
Medical graduates will obviously be able to get more involved in patient treatment in a range of different departments. Graduate interns will rotate in clinical departments - neurology/neurosurgery, paediatrics and paediatric neurology, emergency and critical care medicine, haematology and bone marrow transplant, cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery.
Volunteers will be expected to be in the hospital 12 hours a day, 5 days a week.
What you gain:
You'll get an intimate insight into the medical profession; the chance to learn from expert doctors and an experience that will give you an advantage whether you're aspiring to a career in medicine or already qualified.
