Shantiniketan

Posted By Charlotte Ely on 03 Jan 2008
After another exciting week during which I had a Bengali cookery class - not going to lie, the best part was eating it afterwards, my first Hindi lesson and days spent writing up reviews of events at the newspaper office, where everyone is very young, modern and friendly, the city madness was starting to take its toll on my energy. However, Lizzie, who is a miraculous fountain of knowledge, seemed to have thought ahead and organised a two-day trip to Shantiniketan - (translates to abode of peace) for Celia, Lizzie, her friend Kara from home, and myself.

First Week

After being told at home to prepare myself for a "massive culture shock" I'm amazed at how quickly I've managed to settle in and how many similarities there are with home. Calcutta doesn't smell horrendous, doesn't have cows roaming the streets, does have a metro system and the road that I'm living on is Cal's answer to Oxford St - full of shops and restaurants with a massive park at one end. The woman at my homestay seems very friendly and I get on well with Celia, who has been here for a month and who I share a room with.

My First Impression

Posted By Charli Alexander on 02 Jan 2008
Stepping out of the airport i was assaulted by the intense heat of Chennai and the noise, oh my god, the noise! horns were beeping frantically for no apparent reason- i knew i was going to have to get used to the idea that tooting your horn doesn't mean the same thing as in does at home i.e 'sh*t! i'm going to crash into you!' I got in the car and leaned over my left shoulder with a tugging action.

The Epic by Naomi

Trippy Bangalore kept our social diaries consistently jam-packed during my final month. Flexible working hours at post-summer-camp also kept our wanderlust satisfied, visiting Madikeri, and God's own country'; land of the coconuts, Kerala. The volunteer work has slowed down after the summer camps, being in the office daily acquainted us properly with the core team of our project. My favourite, Bobby, was a ball of energy, liked to punch your arm or back in greeting.

Beginning again in Bangalore

Bangalore...is a brash, brazen, brouhaha (I can't help myself sometimes!) in the state of Karnataka, is a world away from Chennai and a concentrated example of what India is rapidly developing into. Every second person is a software engineer and enormous international businesses are rapidly consuming space and manpower, whilst the generation of young, skilled, single, educated and moneyed professionals are making the most of their well above average wages.

Steps into Chennai

As much as England's temperature and determination to pelt you with rain and wind makes you curse the weather, disembarking BA flight 0035, has re-ignited my appreciation for the cold. The heat of India (even at night) hits hard. My home stay host, Achiah, told me that India has three seasons 'hot, hotter and hottest'. Currently we're in the hotter time of year and it's heating up for globally warmed summer. Surprisingly, the bible that is Lonely Planet, after promising the throbbing hustle and bustle of a city was betrayed by the quiet.
