Follow a reporter training programme and work with a leading newspaper in India
Depending on your interests, you could divide your time between reporting - where
you would be creating and chasing stories for features and editing - where you would
be helping with the design and presentation of the paper.
With offices all over the country, the newspaper covers an area almost half the
size of India. As well as the daily newspaper, regular supplements are published
covering city life, health, and women's issues as well as a special publication
for children and teenagers. This is a daily newspaper and copies sold runs between
250,000 to 300,000 daily.
Your Role: As a reporter, you will be working on features - from lifestyle
and culture, to the local tourist industry. Working under the news editor, you will
have the freedom to chase your own stories and write your own articles. The newspaper
is particularly keen on a foreigner's perspective on local issues. Working as a
reporter requires a pro-active approach with the initiative to familiarise yourself
with the local area. You can also get involved in editing. You could be re-writing
stories and designing pages on their in-house design software. This is a great opportunity
to develop existing skills or for those new to editing, you can learn this software
fairly easily on the job.
What you gain: This is excellent placement for anyone who is thinking of
working in journalism or publishing. It is also a fantastic way to get to know the
country, as you will be following local stories and using your investigative skills
to dig deeper into local issues.
