Help to build schools and community centres in Arusha

Despite being one of the most beautiful and politically stable countries in East Africa, Tanzania is among the poorest countries in the world, where half of the population live on less than $1 per day and have an average life expectancy of only 46. GapGuru supports community development in Tanzania through supporting the FutureSense Foundation and the Construction Volunteer project is a key part of this work.

This project endeavours to send volunteers to help inject energy and materials into some of the neediest and most worthwhile education projects around the Arusha area. Your programme fee contributes to the materials used on site!

Your volunteer role: Gap year volunteers help with much needed building work in Tanzania in a uniquely rewarding experience. Volunteers will work to construct schools, community centres & facilities that help foster positive change through education in and around Arusha. The nature of the work will depend on the skill level and experience of volunteers but is likely to include general labouring and renovation tasks such as plastering, painting and digging. More specific tasks such as brick-laying, plumbing and electrics would require a certain level of prior knowledge although volunteers are encouraged to get involved and pick up skills from the local Tanzanian builders.

Your experience: This volunteer role requires no specific qualifications; however, volunteers need to be adaptable and self-motivated. You will need patience, common-sense and sensitivity to a different environment. A high skill level is not necessary but experience and specific skills are an advantage. A proactive, ‘can-do’ attitude is important. Construction volunteers will have the assistance of a community coordinator and local builders on this project. The local communities we work with are so appreciative of the support they receive from international volunteers and you will be made to feel extremely welcome and at home in the community.
