Conservation work in a National Park on the Pacific coast

Volunteer in one of Ecuador’s largest conservation areas – Machalilla National Park. The park ranges from tropical dry forest to coral reefs and boasts many of the species found on the famous Galapagos Islands. The national park office is located in the beautiful fishing town of Puerto Lopez, which is popular with tourists as it offers great snorkelling, whale watching and some brilliant opportunities to see rare wildlife. This is a great opportunity for those who don’t mind getting their hands dirty and want to really contribute to the conservation efforts of one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world!

Your role: Gap Year Volunteers have two main roles at the park.
    1. Teaching staff English and assisting them in handling groups of tourists and school parties. For this role, volunteers will require a good level of Spanish and need to be happy to get involved in some informal teaching. It is really important for the staff to be able to speak English as they want to be able to communicate with tourists.

    2. Hands-on work around the park. This will include a variety of activities such as building fences, maintaining nature trails and conducting nature surveys. This role does not require such a high level of Spanish and is a great way to experience the national park whilst doing something worthwhile.
What you Gain: This is a great opportunity to experience a beautiful area, but not as a tourist! As you will be staying with a local family, you can really experience Ecuadorian culture and improve your Spanish. You will need to be hard-working and enthusiastic to really make the most of this exciting opportunity.

Basic knowledge of Spanish is essential in order to integrate fully into the local staff and be involved in a large range of tasks. You can take Spanish classes in Quito before you start your placement in the Pacific

Accommodation: Volunteers stay in Puerto Lopez, 10 minutes by car from the National Park office. Accommodation is within the Park Manager’s house and volunteers get their own room and bathroom. You will eat breakfast and dinner together with the family.oast.
