Arriving into Bangkok’s futuristic airport and stepping onto the city’s chaotic and cosmopolitan streets, it’s hard to imagine just how different the rest of the country can be! This community volunteer project gives you the chance to explore Thailand’s picturesque central provinces, where you can help disadvantaged children in schools and orphanages.
Gap year volunteer role: Volunteers can work in either schools or orphanages, depending on their own interests and the needs of the local community. Whether working as an orphanage volunteer or teaching in Thailand, you will be based in Singburi, with your first week spent learning the customs and culture of local Thai people. During this week you will get to know the local area, sample Thai cooking, learn the language and take a trip to the ancient capital Ayutthaya. Gap year volunteers then begin their volunteer work at a local school or orphanage.
The orphanages are quite simple and in need of repair, but they provide much-needed housing, food and education for children in need. Those who volunteer in an orphanage will be asked to play with the children and help them clean and do odd-jobs in the garden. Many of the orphanages have schools on-site, which are open to children from poor local families, so your volunteer childcare role can also involve teaching English and helping with homework. Orphanage volunteers may also be asked to help with basic renovations and maintenance work where necessary.
Volunteers teaching in Thailand work in primary schools and secondary schools in and around Singburi, helping to improve education for children aged between 7 and 18 years old. During term times gap year volunteers teach English and assist local teachers in the classroom. There will also be opportunities to get involved in arts and crafts activities, sports clubs and other subjects of personal interest. As a teaching volunteer in Thailand you may also be asked to help with renovation and maintenance work during school holidays and exam periods.
Your gap year experience: This community volunteer project is a fantastic opportunity to help underprivileged children in central Thailand. By bringing enthusiasm and creativity to schools and orphanages, volunteers can help to enrich the education and lives of children who are deprived of resources and basic facilities.
Those teaching in Thailand or working as an orphanage volunteer need no previous experience, but should be flexible and proactive in their role. And of course, you'll have to enjoy spending time surrounded by children! Gap year volunteers are based in a beautiful riverside setting within easy reach of Singburi town and a number of well-known temples, making this a great place to spend a gap year in Thailand.
