Mount Kilimanjaro becomes popular charity destination

Posted on : Feb 8 2010 5:47PM

Many gap year travellers have chosen Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania as a challenging adventure for their year abroad and one woman is to face the climb while hula hooping for charity.

Julianne McGregor plans to take time out from her human resources job and face the climb to raise money for the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) after her friend, Megan Houchins, developed thyroid cancer.

Ms McGregor will follow in the footsteps of many other fundraisers and celebrities who have taken to Africa's biggest mountain. Last month, actress Jessica Biel and other stars headed to the 19,340-foot summit to raise awareness of the global water crisis.

The 27 year-old plans to climb the mountain in September. She said: "I enjoy hula hooping anyway but I thought that I would do it on Mount Kilimanjaro because it would put a smile on Megs' face.

"If not, the pictures of me dirty, sweaty but resolutely hula hooping surely will."

People travelling to Tanzania can also journey on safari or work on a volunteer project in the local community.
