Gap year travellers use websites over guidebooks

Posted on : Feb 5 2010 4:36PM

Gap year travellers are more inclined to use a travel website than a traditional guidebook, Wanderlust Magazine has said.

The travel magazine and website announced the results for its 2010 Wanderlust Travel Awards yesterday (February 4th), which revealed that websites far superseded guidebooks in terms of user satisfaction.

There was a 15 per cent "satisfaction gap" between the Top Website and Top Guidebook Series. Wildfrontiers.co.uk was voted as the best website, with a 95 per cent satisfaction score. Lonely Planet won the award for top guidebook, but only scored 79 per cent for user satisfaction.

All websites in the top ten earned a percentage of over 80 and Wanderlust itself made the number five spot in the website category.

Lyn Hughes, editor-in-chief of Wanderlust said: "The pace of change in travel has never been faster and these results show traditional guidebooks struggling to complete with blogs and websites which can be updated dozens of times each hour."

The awards recognised Colombia as a Top Emerging Destination and popular gap year destination, Nepal made the list for Top Country.
