Day 1: Mumbai - Fast city living
You can relax or see the sights on this first day in Mumbai - home of Bollywood and the Indian stock exchange. But there's so much to do you're not likely to want to take it easy!
Set along a bay you could take a boat out to see the amazing carvings in the Elephanta caves. Or join the locals for an evening stroll along the beach. Fancy some nightclubbing? There's nowhere better to go star spotting.
Day 2: Mumbai - Skyscrapers and outdoor laundries.
The dhobis (laundrymen) beating and washing on long planks of wood set into the water are a familiar sight around India and you could easily catch sight of some here.
This thriving commercial hub built on seven islands is a city of contrasts from the high rise affluent world of the rich media and business folk on Malabar Hill to the surrounding miles of shanty town that are home to those who come here to try and make their fortune.
Day 3: Goa - Chill out on the beach.
So you spent two days burning the candle at both ends in the city, travelled by train overnight and now here you are and it's time to relax in this laid back haven of coconut fringed golden beaches.
Day 4-9: Goa - Catch some rays or try out the culture, The choice is yours!
When you've had enough of soaking up the sun take a look around. There's more than just sea and sand here. The Portuguese, and therefore Catholic, influence is strong. Where else in the world would you find Christmas celebrated with as much zest as Diwali, or fish curry and rice are eaten side-by-side with chouricos (Portuguese sausages)? It's a place of religious tolerance and diverse architecture and festivals. So take a break from the beach and go explore.
Check out the St Mirabai sculpture at Loutolim. It was carved out of an expanse of laterite stone into a relief 14 m long, by the artist Maendra Jocelino Araujo Alavres in 1994 in just 30 days.
For more traditional architectural exploration try the Damodar temple at Sanguem, the Church of Our Lady of Miracles in Mapusa, or the Shantadurga temple at Fatorpa.
Day 10: Mumbai - Back on the overnight train.
You can be sure to wring the very last drops of your stay with an overnight train journey back to Mumbai.
