You can volunteer to work on your gap year with an organisation that is committed to making a difference to the lives of people affected by autism. Based in Delhi, this pioneering charity is making a huge difference in the way autism is understood and dealt with in India. This busy organisation runs several programs, including clinical services (assessment, counselling and referral), parent and teacher training, running workshops and lectures, conducting research in the field of autism, and publishing their own journal.

Families from all over the country come to them for diagnosis and training so that they can go home with the knowledge and methods to cope with it.

Your Role: Like all non-profit organizations this project relies heavily on volunteers. As a gap year volunteer you can help the organisation to continue with their important life-changing work. Autistic children are visual learners and need a structured environment. You'll receive training to develop your communication and teaching skills. You will primarily be involved in teaching children, age five and above, a variety of subjects such as English, music, drama arts and crafts. You will also receive on-the-job training to teach autistic and communication impaired children. As you gain experience you can run workshops to help teach the parents more about autism. The more time and energy you give to the children and their families, the more you'll develop your communication and leadership skills.

What you Gain: This challenging and rewarding gap year voluntary project gives you the chance to develop great communication and interpersonal skills. Through mentoring the children you will see a change in their behaviour and interaction. Knowing that you have helped is the biggest achievement of all.

• Guidance for processing visa – GapGuru will arrange for all the relevant documents and guide you through the visa process.
• Airport Pick Up – Arriving in a new city and not knowing where to go and how to go can be quite unsettling. A GapGuru representative will meet you at the nearest airport or train station and take you to your place of stay.
• In country Orientation and Welcome Pack – When you arrive in the city, you will have an orientation where you could meet other gapers from GapGuru, know all about the city, how to find your way around, where to get SIM cards for the phone, small bits that you will need help sorting out in the first few days.
• In Country Support – Our local co-ordinators act as a friend and guide through out your stay. Whether you feel home sick or just want some local information, they are there to make sure you have a memorable experience.
• Accommodation – In most cases, you will be staying with a local host family. It gives you a taste of the daily life of a local and sample some delicious come cooked food. In some cases accommodation is provided with the projects.
