Use your skills in the different aspects of theatre to help children with special needs

Volunteer on your gap year at a centre that is dedicated to the rehabilitation of disabled children through music, dance, drama, story telling and other aspects of theatre. Theatre workshops are goal-orientated with certain activities that support a child's individual physiotherapy or speech therapy program. Through this work the child's communication skills and means of self expression are greatly improved.

The organization also runs another community development centre which focuses on vocational training for disabled adults. Here they are taught, along with music and drama, skills such as embroidery, block-printing, painting, and handicrafts.

Your role: If you're interested in any of the performing arts you'll get tremendous satisfaction on this project by using your skills to help these children blossom and grow. You'll expand your own knowledge of dance and drama into the dimension of India's long and rich tradition in the field.

As a gap year volunteer, you can work as an assistant to the class teachers in music and theatre rehabilitation work. You would be working alongside the staff and helping to make activities as enjoyable and productive as possible.

You can also help train disabled adults in any of the following skills - embroidery, block-printing, painting, and handicrafts. You do not necessarily need to have any experience, just the desire to learn and the patience to achieve.

Whether you aim to go into the performing arts as a professional or are thinking about working in fields like occupational therapy, art therapy, special needs teaching or community work, you'll get terrific experience, satisfaction and have a lot of fun on this project that will add to your own studies and your CV.

• In country Orientation and Welcome Pack – When you arrive in the city, you will have an orientation where you could meet other gapers from GapGuru, know all about the city, how to find your way around, where to get SIM cards for the phone, small bits that you will need help sorting out in the first few days.
• In Country Support – Our local co-ordinators act as a friend and guide through out your stay. Whether you feel home sick or just want some local information, they are there to make sure you have a memorable experience.
• Accommodation – In most cases, you will be staying with a local host family. It gives you a taste of the daily life of a local and sample some delicious come cooked food. In some cases accommodation is provided with the projects.
