Volunteer with youth by providing them key skills to have a livelihood

Spend your gap year in Arusha - help youth from underprivileged backgrounds develop essential skills to enhance their career and build a livelihood.

Stared in 2004, this centre aims at providing vocational skills to end the cycle of poverty among vulnerable youth and orphans. The centre initially focussed on tailoring skills with a view of enabling students to have their own income generating activities once they leave the centre. In the last few years, the trainings have expanded to provide business management skills, courses on hotel management, mechanics, tour guide classes, computer classes and language classes teaching English, French and Spanish. Besides providing training support, the centre provides the much needed psychosocial support. The classes are fairly small (up to 10 students) and most students are young adults between 18 and 24 years. The lessons are run in 2 hour blocks, with 3 – 4 blocks per day.

Your role: There are a variety of subjects you could get involved in teaching and the key here is to make teaching relevant to the roles the students are aspiring for. Many of them are keen to be involved in the tourist industry so understanding foreign cultures and customs is as important for them as their formal learning to prepare them to deal with tourists successfully. There is demand for teachers in English, Computer Studies and Business Studies as well as a range of Life Skills such as writing a CV, interview techniques and how to work successfully in a team. There is flexibility to focus on the areas you are strong in.

• Airport Pick Up – Arriving in a new city and not knowing where to go and how to go can be quite unsettling. A GapGuru representative will meet you at the nearest airport or train station and take you to your place of stay.
• In country Orientation and Welcome Pack – When you arrive in the city, you will have an orientation where you could meet other gapers from GapGuru, know all about the city, how to find your way around, where to get SIM cards for the phone, small bits that you will need help sorting out in the first few days.
• In Country Support – Our local co-ordinators act as a friend and guide through out your stay. Whether you feel home sick or just want some local information, they are there to make sure you have a memorable experience.
• Accommodation – In most cases, you will be staying with a local host family. It gives you a taste of the daily life of a local and sample some delicious come cooked food. In some cases accommodation is provided with the projects.
