About the Organisation: From the few basic buildings when the school first started there is now
a new school block with over 700 children from Kindergarten age to
standard XI children being taught here.
The school's vision and mission remains the same, to help those marginalized from society, although children are now from mixed caste backgrounds and all Tamil speaking.
There is a Board of Directors running the Trust, which 15 years ago authorized the building of a community hospital next door to the school to cater for the healthcare needs of the children, their families and the local general community.
Who they are: The school was established 100 years ago, 2007 is its centenary year. The main wish of the benefactor who funded the school was that it should provide relief and opportunities through education and training for certain children from marginalized sections of the population. In more recent years this has expanded to encompass health care for the children as well.
What they do: The school is working to the government curriculum but wants to provide so much more to its students. It is very different in that lessons are taught in Tamil to 11 years old and then switches to teaching in English. This gives the children a definite advantage in relation to finding work on completion of their studies. One of the reasons for wanting volunteers is to bring a different perspective and widen the children’s horizons so that they see much more than just their local community.
What you can do: The inputs you can give to their daily schooling will help broaden their horizons, improve their English and expose them to foreigners – a vital aspect of gaining possible future employment.
