Assist with teaching english, maths, at these after hours education centres

Help slum and street children into education on your gap year in India. We partner with two projects here that strive to bring together street kids and volunteers with energy and enthusiasm to help educate and brighten the lives of less privileged children. The projects take education to children who cannot make their way to schools. They run classes in makeshift camps closer to construction sites, in shared school spaces. Both projects were established more than 15 years ago and run many centres in Pune.


Your role: You'll use all your skills and ingenuity to find innovative ways of encouraging and enthusing children to continue to learn in some very difficult circumstances as well as helping them with basic English and other subjects. After a short induction period you will either be working alongside existing teaching staff or looking after a group of children yourself.

You will have your own specified groups to teach, your own set timetable and a curriculum. This will normally involve English, Math, General Awareness, Arts and Crafts or any other subjects that fascinate them and are likely to inspire the children. You'll be able to bring new ideas to the project, which welcomes innovation, and is always on the lookout for new ways of motivating the children. At times, you may be asked to round up children from their homes and walk them to schools.

You might even come up with innovative ideas for them to earn a living. One gapper came up with an idea for the children to make and sell beaded straps for sunglasses and the project encouraged it!

There are opportunities to help in a variety of ways depending upon your interests, skills and ability.

You will independently run classes and activities, be appreciated for what you offer and leave with memories, many friends and a sense of having done something meaningful.

• Airport Pick Up – Arriving in a new city and not knowing where to go and how to go can be quite unsettling. A GapGuru representative will meet you at the nearest airport or train station and take you to your place of stay.
• In country Orientation and Welcome Pack – When you arrive in the city, you will have an orientation where you could meet other gapers from GapGuru, know all about the city, how to find your way around, where to get SIM cards for the phone, small bits that you will need help sorting out in the first few days.
• In Country Support – Our local co-ordinators act as a friend and guide through out your stay. Whether you feel home sick or just want some local information, they are there to make sure you have a memorable experience.
• Accommodation – In most cases, you will be staying with a local host family. It gives you a taste of the daily life of a local and sample some delicious come cooked food. In some cases accommodation is provided with the projects.
