Help Children Into Education

Help motivate children from the slums to enter full time education.
For those of you who have seen Slumdog Millionaire, it is not difficult to visualise
that in India many young children opt out of education in favour of a life on the
streets or working as child labourers.
Volunteer during your gap year with this organisation in Chennai that runs transit
schools to motivate these young people back into mainstream education. Since children
cannot make it to school, they take the school to the children in the form of transit
schools.
This organisation focuses on integrated community development, running several programmes
in youth development, vocational training, income generation and health care initiatives.
Since the atmosphere in any slum is the least conducive to any form of serious study
there is a high numbers of children dropping out of schools. The project has opened
centres where school-going children from the neighbourhood gather each evening.
Your role: As a gap year volunteer you would be placed in one or more of
these schools. This could involve moving around the city of Chennai holding classes
in different locations. You would be required to teach conversational English and
other informal activities (sports, games, arts and crafts etc.).
Helping with teaching is vital to an organisation that depends on volunteers but
more importantly your enthusiasm and ability to make learning fun will be particularly
welcomed. You'll be able to use all your skills and knowledge, whether it's in sports,
arts, crafts, games, music to help this project's children stay motivated to learn
and work to improve their lives.

Use your imagination to inspire theirs!
What you Gain: This is a wonderful gap year voluntary project where your
imagination and enthusiasm will make a real difference to the lives of these young
children. See these young children grow in knowledge and determination, working
their way to a better future.

Testimonials: “ The range of programmes
and activities offer a unique opportunity for those interested in working with the
underprivileged members of society. From the first day, I was the privileged recipient
of the hospitality of staff and students. The young people I have had the pleasure
of working with are the definition of enthusiasm and optimism. It's an honour to
be even a small part of their lives.
