About the Organisation

A leading conservation project
located in a sleepy coastal village

Crocodile Conservation: About Organisation About Organisation: This is a great place to live and work as the people here are so easy-going. It's world renowned for its research in herpetology. It's laid out almost like a zoo and is open to visitors. Volunteers share the charming accommodation (a shack with a mezzanine) on site and food is provided. But volunteers are welcome to use the kitchen and anyone who can make pizza is especially welcome!

Who they are: 30 years ago 8 acres of land on India's east coast south of Chennai and close to the famous temples complex of Mahabalipuram became a trust for the conservation and study of the three types of crocodile found in India, the mugger, the gharial and the saltwater.

Crocodile Conservation: What they do What they do: Starting with 30 adults the trust has bred more than 5,000 and now holds over 2,400 crocodiles of 14 different species. It has supplied more than 1,500 animals and hundreds of eggs for restocking and breeding programmes in various crocodile states of India. Now, it's a centre for conservation, research and education and also home to other endangered species of turtles and tortoises - not to mention the King Cobra, monitor lizards, pythons and iguanas

What you can do: You could find yourself doing anything in the centre from maintaining and cleaning croc enclosures to collecting data for research programmes, to acting as guides and working with schoolchildren. School and college groups receive special talks and demonstrations - a highlight is the chance to cuddle a baby croc or one of the trust's amiable pythons! Crocodiles become more active after dark so you could help take visitors on a night safari! The programme's open to all volunteers, not only those who are intending to specialise in this field, so it's also a chance to develop leadership and communication skills - and you'll make some great human friends too!
