Report on local stories, chase special features and edit content at this local newspaper

On your gap year, spend time exploring a new country and gain experience in journalism. This placement is with a local newspaper in Arusha, Tanzania. The newspaper was started 13 years ago, initially being published twice per month. It is now a weekly newspaper giving news of the Arusha Region and has a circulation of 3000-5000 copies as well as a website. It has 16 pages covering all the details of the surrounding areas. It has also recently undertaken the contract as a local arm for a daily newspaper in Dar-Es-Salam, so there will be work for you to do round the week. They have a small office in a modern office blocksituated in the centre of Arusha town, handy for all the main amenities. The office has a bright and airy feel and plenty of computers. The editor is friendly and welcoming of any new volunteers.

Your role: The editor will assign you work which could involve editing stories or reporting on events in the town. You will be required to work independently and sometimes to tight deadlines. As is the case in journalism, you will need to show the initiative to come up with ideas and also to go out and investigate stories on a hunch.

You must be outgoing and communicative to do well in this role and to make the most of the opportunity. Good writing skills and a good command of the English language are clearly essential to be able to do this role.
