Help Children with Cerebral Palsy - Project Info

Gap year volunteers work with this pioneering organisation, based in Kolkata, which is dedicated to meeting the needs of people with cerebral palsy in Eastern India. The organisation has grown from a small school with two children to now supporting over 3000 families from all walks of life, regardless of their background

Help Children with Cerebral Palsy - Your RoleYour Role: As a gap year volunteer you can help in different departments of the organization either working directly with the children in class or in computer training, art or drama. The classes are fairly small, so there will be a lot of one to one tuition. You can help with physiotherapy in the center's special aqua-therapy pool and get involved in other areas of development work, such as activities which are organised to help boost the children's confidence. You can work with the adults on vocational training in things like catering, computer literacy and printing, or their formal education.

What you gain: Working on this project is a rewarding and enlightening gap year experience. You can make some great friends with the people you teach and work with, and really make a difference to people's lives. The charity has a very friendly and supportive work environment, which allows you to learn and develop your skills while making a real and valuable contribution.

This project is completely different to what many would assume an Indian school for disabled children would be. Though there is a language barrier i was still able to make a difference in joining in with group activities with the younger children, to helping the more capable to learn English.

Amy Windibank, 20, is taking time out before university and spending 6 months volunteering and travelling across India.
