The Monday was our first day at the hospital; we were driven there by Sowmya. She showed us to Neeloofer, who is in human resources. We were then sent to the emergency department where we started our placement. Within the first 30 seconds a patient came in who had suffered from a heart attack, she was in a very bad state. She was our first patient so I felt connected to her, within 10 minutes she was dead :( :( :( I was a bit upset.
We met Dr Navneet and he showed us around the emergency department and told us about his travels all around the world. He has worked in 60 different countries and has visited 67 different countries. He asked us to come and visit his house and have some of his worldwide collection of wines, beers and liquors. We also observed a few other patients, but the first day was quite unsuccessful because we were not sure what to ask, and if it was the right time to ask and if we were being too pushy. During the afternoon a patient came in complaining of breathlessness and had had an asthma attack, she was about our age and lots of her friends came to visit her. We got quite friendly with her friends and they asked us to come out with them at the weekend and go out clubbing!!! They said they would show us round New Delhi and where the cheap clothes markets are and where the sights were.
We came home and slept because we were so tired and still jet lagged.
Tuesday was a much more interesting and exciting day at the hospital. We met some of the other GapGuru travellers. Rob was from Shropshire, and was here with Lisa his girlfriend. Rob showed us exactly where to go and what to do, and to be pushy with questions because the doctors did not mind. He took us up to the intensive care units (ICU's), and then on to viewing a surgery. We firstly had to "scrub in", get all the surgical gear on. We saw a pneumonectomy, where part of the patient’s lung was being removed. It was fascinating to see how tough the human body is e.g. they were using a huge clamp on a ratchet to wrench the ribs apart. For this particular patient they were removing some excess tissue which had formed around the lung and were putting pressure on it, the patient was physically breathing with one lung only. An electrical rod was used to remove lesion the excess tissue from the inner walls. I found this invigorating. We then had lunch in the canteen for a mere 25 rupees each (34pence). Me and John then made our way down to the E.R. again, and found some more interesting patients. We were also told we may get the chance to ride in the ambulance, helicopter or plane. Which sounds amazing!!
After the hospital hours had finished we were picked up by our new college friends (Pringal and co.) He showed us to his swanky new car, a Honda which had leather seats and top quality sound system. He loved his Akon music, his favourite songs were; "Sexy Chick", "Beautiful" and "Dangerous'. He took us to his college and we met his friends, they were all studying business at college. We were then taken to the market where we found out, how cheap clothes actually are in India. I was told my Van Heusen trousers i bought earlier in the mall could be found for 400 rupees instead of the 1500 I paid. I bought a t-shirt, a shirt, a belt, two pairs of boxers and a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses all for just under 1,000 rupees. EVERYTHING IS SO CHEAP!!!!
