This past weekend Paddy and I we fortunate enough to be invited to a
Hindu wedding! On Friday the women had henna on their hands. It was so
beautiful but it took ages to apply and I had to keep it on for hours!
On Saturday I went to Suvarna's at 4pm and my hair needed to be done!
Over the course of the wedding I wore three different outfits and it so
lucky that Pappy (Suvarna’s daughter) and I are the same size! Later on,
on Saturday we all went to the groom’s house ad the groom had to wear
old clothes and with mango leaves turmeric was smeared onto him, by the
end of it he was completely bright yellow! The women in the family then
went to the bride’s house (the bride and groom are not allowed to see
each other for eight days before the wedding!) and the same was done to
her, she also was totally bright yellow! We all then went back tot he
grooms house and we ate a meal together. As we left the grooms house
very late and I had to be at Suvarna’s very early I stayed at her house
for the night. We had to get up quite early and the maid came in to
dress me as I had to wear a sari! At first I was so scared it would fall
down but after a while you get used to it. We got to the place where
the wedding ceremony was to be held at about 930 and we had breakfast
there before the groom had arrived. Guests stared to arrive and the
groom arrived he looked so nervous! Shortly after the bride arrived
however she was still not allowed to see the groom and certain
ceremonies were carried out separately.
Throughout the wedding Suvarna and members of Suvarna’s family
explained everything to us which was very helpful! After the wedding
which ended about 3 30ish we went back to Suvarna’s to get some rest
before the reception that evening. The reception was so lovely and the
bride and groom had to pose for photos for about 2 hours I felt so sorry
for them! On the Monday Paddy and I didn’t go into work as we went to
the Pooja where the marriage is blessed. It was very interesting but the
priest chanted for about 3 or four hours I was so tired that I went to
sleep!
