This project is improving the lives of many children and families in Kolkata through providing high quality education, vocational training, healthcare and awareness programmes. They have eleven different schools or centres for children from the surrounding slum areas. Many of these children have little or no home support and so have dropped out of government schools or were never enrolled on the first place. The schools are on the outskirts of the city in semi-rural environments and as a gap year volunteer you will be able to help assist the teachers in the classroom especially with English, and also help the older children with homework and extra tuition. There will also be opportunities for you to use your imagination to make the learning fun through art, craft, drama or music. You will be teaching small groups within the classroom.
Your Role: As a volunteer at this project you would helping to teach English in informal schools by taking small groups of children aged between 5 – 12 and working on specific activities with them. You would be working within the teacher’s lesson plan but under your own initiative. You will need to be creative and imaginative to plan and facilitate the activities and make the English learning fun and interesting. You will also have the opportunity to provide after school coaching to children who go to government schools but need support as they are first-generation learners (their parents didn’t go to school). Coaching these children will involve planning and teaching larger groups and working closely with the teachers to fit the learning into their curriculum.
What you Gain: These schools are within small communities that live on the outskirts of the city and very much appreciate having international volunteers to come and assist in teaching English. You will have the opportunity to get to know the community well and learn about their culture. You will challenge yourself by working under your own steam and initiative, and in an environment where English is not widely spoken. You will gain confidence and experience in organising, planning and conducting lessons with children who will find it invaluable.

The children here are always smiling and so full of energy. They are really sweet and it is very satisfying to see them singing new songs that I've taught them. The best things about Kolkata is meeting so many people and finding out about the culture and way of life.
